The main source din al-Islam is al-Qur an and al-Hadith in Arabic, so that understanding is valid to both be supported by the Arab language competence.
Theoretically and empirically, that competence can not be achieved only through education S1, but needs to be deepened through S2 even S3 level. Therefore, most of the public and government institutions have an interest for further studies in the field of Arabic language education in order to contribute to national development, especially the development of the field of religion.
The aim of The Study Program is two folded:
- To upgrade the educational qualification and professionality of Arabic language teaching staff at university and school levels; and
- To prepare and develop Arabic language professionals and other professionals.
The expected learning outcomes for the Master’s Degree in Arabic Language Education Study Program of the School of Post-Graduate Studies of UPI cover range of abilities, as follows:

The assessment for each course is made in accordance with UPI’s Academic Guidelines. The assessment components are documented in the syllabus and course unit of each respective course and this assessment reflects students’ learning outcomes and the accomplishments of the content of the program as a form of implementation of the curriculum. The assessment components of learning outcomes are generally obtained through midterm examination and final examination. The components also include assignments in the forms of individual/group presentation, performance, portfolio, mini research reports, and papers.
The whole instructional processes are assessed through qualification examination and the students can take it if they have met the minimum requirements of 24 course credits and a minimum TOEFL and IMALAH score of 450. The qualification examination measures the students’ pedagogical content knowledge, Arabic language skills, and research method competence. Students are deemed to pass the qualification examination if they obtain a minimum score of 2.75. Those who fail are allowed to take a remedial examination in the following month after the first qualification examination. Those who do not pass the second qualification examination will be considered to leave the program.
Students are required to write a master’s degree thesis and the thesis writing process begins with a research proposal submitted to the Study Program at the aftermath of supervision given by a supervising lecturer and followed by a seminar of the thesis proposal reviewed by three lecturers. Following this seminar, students can conduct the research and thesis writing assisted by one or two supervising lecturers. To defend their thesis, they have to pass through two processes: First Stage Examination and Second Stage Examination.
What follows are several possible research areas for students’ thesis:
- Arabic language teaching and learning
- Arabic language testing
- Arabic literary work
- Arabic linguistics
- Islamic studies
- Analysis of Al Quran or al-Hadits, etc.
In addition to the students graduating from teacher education institutions, the Study Program admits those who graduated from other undergraduate higher education institutions, provided that they passed the written exam and interview, and showed Arabic language skills required to attend postgraduate classes. To adapt to pedagogical sciences, they are also required to attend extra classes of pedagogical and teaching foundations. An integrated curriculum offered by the Study Program enables the students from different educational background to quickly accept and understand its subjects and contents.
