The Doctoral Program of Civic Education (DP-CE) of the School of Post- Graduate Studies Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (SPs UPI or Indonesia University of Education) was established in the academic year 2008-2009 based on UPI Rector Decision Number: 4879/H40/PP/2008.

The DP-CE of the School of Post-Graduate Studies of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (SPs UPI or Indonesia University of Education) was established in the academic year of 2008-2009 based on the Decree of Rector UPI Number: 4879/H40/PP/2008. The PD-CE Study Program is established to meet the needs of practitioners and experts in developing civic education programs so that they have a good understanding of civic education, are able to adapt to community life, and are able to solve societal, national, and state problems in the context of civic education .

DP-CE has a commitment to build and develop civic education in order to support UPI program as an institution that focuses its study in the field of education. In addition, DP-CE consistently develops UPI programs in academic and non-academic fields that include education and teaching, research and community service to address challenges and meet community needs at local, regional and global levels.

DP-CE aims to prepare students to become educator (lecturer), researcher, developer, and practitioner in the field of civic education who have: (1) a broad insight into the scholarship of civic education; (2) the ability of civic education expertise in depth; (3) ability in research, development, planning, and management of education and learning of Civics and disseminating educational and research result to fulfill society need.

The expected leaning outcomes for the Doctor’s Degree in Civic Education Study Program of the School of Post-Graduate Studies of UPI cover a range of abilities as follows:

This program is a doctor by coursework with research component as capstone project.


Assessment for each subject refers to the UPI Manual of Education Management. The assessment component is documented in the syllabus and the semester learning plan of each course and this assessment reflects the students’ learning outcomes and the completeness of the curriculum implementation. Components of assessment of learning outcomes are generally obtained through midterm and semester exams, paper preparation tasks, presentations, portfolio performance, and book analysis reports.

In addition to the assessment of the course, the course is assessed through a qualification exam that will determine whether the student is qualified to continue study or not. Students can take this exam if they have completed at least 24 credits of the course and have a minimum TOEFL score of 500. Materials included in the qualification examination consist of pedagogic content, civic education content, and knowledge of research methods.  Students are declared to pass the qualification examination if they obtain a minimum score of 3,00.  Those who have not gained the minimum score are allowed to take a remedial examination in the following month after the first qualification examination.  Those who do not pass the second qualification examination will be considered to have dropped out of the program.

Completion of doctor’s disertation is required for the doctor’s degree.  The disertation writing process begins with the making of research proposal supervised by a supervising lecturer and followed by a seminar of the thesis proposal reviewed by three lecturers.  Following this seminar, students can conduct the research and disertation writing with the help of two or three supervising lecturers.  Upon the completion of the disertation, students will take a disertation defense, which is divided into First Disertation Defense and Second Disertation Defense or Disertation Promotion.
